Let the Light Shine In! How sunlight Interacts with the interior Design of Your Home or Office

Light plays an important role in the Interior Design of any space, especially your home. Architects like Frank Loyd Wright, one of my favorites, was intrigued by natural light and designed some of his beautiful creations so sun light would enhance the design of the structure.

Some architects have placed wood beams and windows in areas so that the sun light penetrating through the windows would purposely cast shadows against specific walls to create a dramatic ambiance to the room.  Architects place windows in specific places with regards to height to either create more light or reduce the light in a room. Especially here in Arizona where we get just about 365 days of sunlight.

Personally, I love natural light. I love the warmth from the light. I love how direct and indirect sunlight fills a room and it’s almost as if the colors dance right off the fabrics or art the light is casting its glow onto.

Know How Light Affects Your Home

The art you have on a wall can be enhanced by light or it can be drenched with too much light, washing out the piece of art. It is always prudent to know how sun light will affect the entire room.

If you have collected beautiful art, no matter the cost, and it is placed in direct sunlight, the Light could diminish the beauty fading out the details in the color of the art piece. This can happen to upholstery and wood as well. Even though I do love natural light in a room, I understand the harm it can cause as well.

Control The Heat With Window Coverings

Here in Arizona the heat is a HUGE factor with controlling the light/heat from the sun, especially in the middle of our Arizona summers. Having a west or south exposure to any parts of your home will surely add heat to those spaces.  Being smart about temperature control with windows and window coverings is essential!

The light and heat can be controlled with functional and beautiful window coverings. There are blinds and shades with levels of light filtering so you can control the amount of light/heat into a room.  Drapery is a warm and lovely enhancement to any room.  Simple stationary drapery panels create a perfect duo when coupled with selected blinds or shades there are different options to choose from. If you want to see the options, look under the treatments page. One option is motorization. A must have for high and large windows, or if you have limitations with your  You will see examples of different styles of window coverings and treatments that I have completed for my clients.
